Our Story

About Saturn Christian Church

Rooted in faith since 1858. Serving Columbia City and the world today.

Our History

A Church Built on Faithful Beginnings

Sometime prior to 1858, Mrs. Rhoda Swayne invited several of the early settlers of Jefferson Township to gather in her log cabin for Sunday School and Bible study. These humble gatherings became the foundation of what would later become Saturn Christian Church.

The first public meetings of this group of believers were held at the Red School House, located east of Broxon Cemetery in Jefferson Township, Whitley County, Indiana. On August 2, 1858, during the ministry of William Dowling, twenty-two charter members officially organized the congregation and elected its first officers.

In 1874, the congregation moved into its first church building, the facility that still serves as our church home today. The land was generously donated by James Broxon, along with much of the lumber and labor needed for construction. L. L. Carpenter of Wabash dedicated the building to Christian worship and service to Jesus Christ.

Over the years, the church building has been remodeled and updated several times to meet the needs of the congregation and community. In 2011, a fellowship hall was completed, providing additional space for ministry and gatherings. Though the facilities have changed through the years, our mission to serve Jesus Christ has remained the same.

Saturn is governed by a Church Board and Elder Board whose members are elected by the congregation. As an independent Christian Church, we are not affiliated with any denomination, but we partner with other churches and organizations to advance the Kingdom of God locally and globally.

Why We Exist

Our Mission and Vision

Our mission is to live the teachings of Christ, to declare God's glory among the nations, to share the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ, and to serve through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Our vision is to develop within us, as a congregation, the relationships that will invite others to join us in our walk with the Lord.

Our Foundation

What We Believe

Our beliefs are rooted in the Bible and centered on Jesus Christ.

The Bible

We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and the final authority for faith and practice in our lives.

Jesus Christ

We believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God, born of a virgin, who lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose bodily from the dead.

Salvation

We believe salvation is a gift from God received through faith in Jesus Christ, repentance from sin, and baptism by immersion.

The Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit indwells every believer and empowers us to live a life that honors God and serves others.

The Church

We believe the church is the body of Christ, called to worship, grow in faith, and carry the gospel to every corner of the world.

Communion and Baptism

We observe communion every Sunday as a remembrance of Christ's sacrifice. We practice baptism by immersion as an outward expression of inward faith.
